Jet engines are usually used as aircraft engine for jet aircraft. They are also used for missiles and high speed car.

Working of Jet Engine:
As above diagram shows air is sucked by the fan and it further compress by the compressor at high pressure for complete combustion than fuel is sprayed by the fuel injector into the combustion chamber, the mixture of sprayed fuel and high pressure air ignited by an electric spark. High temperature and pressurized gases out from the combustion chamber and strikes on turbine blade, the turbine extracts energy from gases and increase velocity of gases. These high velocity gases exhaust from nozzle and in this way useful thrust is generated for propelling the aircraft.
In a jet propulsion engine, the propulsive power is not produced by the gas turbine, instead it drives the compressor and auxiliary components. Thus the net work output of a jet propulsion cycle is zero. The exhaust gases that exist in the turbine are relatively higher pressure are subsequently accelerated in the nozzle and then are discharged to the surroundings to produce the thrust to propel the aircraft.
